The falls are also known as Kerepakupai Vená, which means “waterfall of the deepest place” in the indigenous Pemon language.

Angel Falls is named after James Angel, an American aviator who discovered the waterfall after crash-landing his plane nearby in 1933. He was the first person to fly over the Auyantepui mountain, which is why the waterfall is named after him.
