Rockefeller Center is one of the most iconic and impressive skyscrapers in New York City. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the skyscraper was built in the 1930s and is a symbol of the city’s history and culture. The main tower stands 872 feet tall and is the centerpiece of the complex. But how tall is Rockefeller Center?
The Towers at Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres of land in Midtown Manhattan. The centerpiece of the complex is the 70-floor Art Deco skyscraper, which is 872 feet (266 meters) tall and one of the tallest buildings in New York City. The original design for the building was by renowned architect Raymond Hood, who also designed the nearby Radio City Music Hall.
The main tower is flanked by two shorter towers, the GE Building and the Time-Life Building, which are both 690 feet (210 meters) tall. The GE Building is the tallest of the two and is the second-tallest building in the complex. The Time-Life Building is third tallest, but it is the most prominent due to its distinctive stepped design.
The Other Buildings at Rockefeller Center
In addition to the three main towers, there are 16 other buildings at Rockefeller Center. These buildings are much shorter than the main towers, ranging from 27 to 54 stories in height. The shortest building is the British Empire Building, which stands at just 27 stories and is located on the west side of the complex. The tallest of the other buildings is the International Building, which stands 54 stories and is located on the east side of the complex.
The Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center
The top of the main tower at Rockefeller Center features a popular observation deck, which offers spectacular views of the city. The observation deck stands 872 feet (266 meters) above the ground and is one of the highest points in the city. From the deck, visitors can see the iconic skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty.
The History of Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center was built in the 1930s by John D. Rockefeller Jr. The complex was designed to be a self-contained city within a city, with shops, offices, and entertainment venues. The main tower was built first, and the other buildings were added in the following years. The complex was completed in 1939 and has since become a major tourist attraction in New York City.
