History of the Georgia Aquarium
The Georgia Aquarium opened to the public in 2005 and was the brainchild of Bernie Marcus, the co-founder of The Home Depot. His vision was to create an aquarium of unprecedented size and scope. The aquarium cost $290 million to construct and was funded entirely by Marcus and his wife Billi.
The aquarium is located in downtown Atlanta near Centennial Olympic Park and the World of Coca-Cola. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is the only aquarium in the United States to exhibit all four species of beluga whales.

The Cold Water Quest exhibit is home to animals from the coldest depths of the ocean, including beluga whales, sea lions, walruses, and penguins. The Georgia Explorer exhibit is a 4-D theater that takes visitors on an interactive journey through Georgia’s coastal habitats.
