History of Lima, Ohio
Lima was founded in 1831 by Colonel James Riley, a veteran of the War of 1812. It was originally named “Riley’s Settlement” but later changed to Lima after the Greek city of the same name. Lima is the only city in the United States to be named after the ancient Greek city.
Lima was in the center of a large oil boom in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was home to the first commercially successful oil company, the Lima Oil Company. This company was the first to drill an oil well in the state of Ohio, and the first to refine oil and ship it to other parts of the country.
In the early 1900s, Lima was home to several major manufacturing companies, including the National Cash Register Company (NCR) and the Lima Locomotive Works. The city was also a leader in the production of paper products, including high-quality printing paper and cardboard.
